The report uses cost analysis to develop per mile costs for operating refrigerated trucks hauling fresh fruits and vegetables. The effects of multiple pickups and deliveries and loaded backhaul on costs are examined. The relationship between product density and rates is also examined. In general, the cost per mile decreases as the length of trip is increased. Loaded backhaul and multiple pickups and deliveries increase the per-mile cost considerably for shorter trips but only slightly for the longer trips. Product density has considerable effect on the rates that must be charged to cover a trucker's cost.
