An error analysis of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) Navigation (NAV) System was carried out for the update of the Descartes traverses that were being considered for Apollo 16 mission. The objective of this analysis was to determine the NAV system gyro realignment plan along the three traverses such that the maximum position error on each traverse will not exceed 600 meters. Following the gyro performance on Apollo 15 a gyro drift rate of 5 degrees per hour was used in this analysis. The realignment plan which resulted from this analysis is: (1) no realignment is necessary on the first traverse, (2) one realignment is necessary on the second traverse, and (3) one realignment is also necessary on the third traverse.
