The report describes a study of the human factors and highway safety aspects of state-of-the-art automotive adaptive devices which permit a physically disabled driver to operate a motor vehicle. The study consisted of a review of recent studies of problems disabled drivers have, their record in highway safety, and how well present standards govern the manufacture and use of adaptive equipment. The leading manufacturers were contacted for their present product lines, new developments, and manufacturing history. Six exploratory and demonstrational tests were run, of the operability of hand controls, modifications to steering systems, and several different versions of joystick controls.
