The most basic aspects in the design of nozzles for liquid propellant rocket engines are presented. First the divergence loss and the optimizing of the nozzle contour are described. Second the flow separation and performance of sea level nozzles are discussed. Alternative sea level nozzle concepts are outlined. The heat transfer and basic concepts for the cooling of nozzles are presented. The tutorial examples are based on the simplest methods applicable to get a transparent description of each subject.
