Airborne simulation was conceived as a general purpose flying qualities research technique. Many diverse uses, forecast for the Total In-Flight Simulator (TIFS) while it was being developed, have come to pass, but diversity of application has exceeded even the most imaginative predictions. Some of the most unusual TIFS projects since it became active in 1971 are described. The objective is to help define and illustrate the role of airborne simulation in aerospace research and development as it interfaces with analysis, ground simulation, and flight test.
