The mileage and vehicle miles of travel data in the following tables are based on roads/streets located within the District's geographical boundaries (Administrative District). Vehicle miles of travel (VMT) are calculated by multiplying the mileage times the annual average daily traffic (AADT). VMT data are expressed as either daily vehicle miles of travel (DVMT) or as annual vehicle miles of travel (AVMT). In this report, the State System consists of state maintained highways including highways marked as Interstate, United States or Illinois routes. The term 'urban' applies to those miles that are in incorporated or unincorporated places with 5,000 or greater population. Urban areas may include any adjacent areas that have or are developing urban characteristics. The term 'rural' consists of those miles located outside an urban area. An urbanized area, consists of an incorporated place and adjacent densely settled area that together have a minimum population of 50,000. Mileage and VMT data are based on calculations from the Illinois Highway Information System. Motor fuel consumption by vehicle type is calculated from motor fuel tax receipts reported by the Illinois Department of Revenue.
