Several aspects of the Agency's Frontal and Side Impact programs were addressed. Barrier crash test data were analyzed to determine front structural characteristics associated with good crash survival potential. Car/car crash tests were performed which demonstrated significant aggressiveness differences among large cars, and enabled characteristics associated with aggressive behavior to be identified. The standard fixed rigid barrier was evaluated as a crashworthiness-measuring device, and three different barriers were evaluated for their ability to measure frontal structural aggressiveness. Finally, the importance of striking vehicle front structural stiffness distribution on struck vehicle occupant injury severity in side collisions was considered, and crash data were analyzed which showed differences in front stiffness distribution between two mid-size automobiles.
