The conclusions and recommendations resulting from an examination of energy use in the marine transportation industry are presented. The methodology used is discussed. Specific information is discussed concerning energy consumption and productivity in these sectors: foreign trade; Great Lakes; inland waterways; coastal; offshore; pleasure craft; and fishing and miscellaneous. Based on the energy savings potentials calculated, the programs relating to slow speed diesels, diesel bottoming cycles, and hull maintenance and smoothing are recommended for funding in FY1978. Three high risk program areas that should be evaluated in the future are identified as: adiabatic diesels, Naval Academy heat balance engine, and closed cycle gas turbines.
