The report is a study of the requirements placed on extravehicular protection and operation devices by the orbital environment and contemplated orbital missions. The orbital missions studied cover the period 1970-1978 to the extent that they are presently defined. The conclusions favor a suited astronaut supported by propulsion, communication and working aids (non-anthropomorphic suits were not included in this study). Concepts of vehicles satisfying the requirements developed are presented as is the concept of a modularly assembled device which can be modified to best suit specific mission requirements. (Author)
