The U. S. Corps of Army Engineers has been charged by the Congress of the United States with the responsibility for construction and maintenance of shipping channels throughout the country. During the past 200 years it has created over 25,000 miles of channels and has developed over 100 commercial ports and harbours as well as over 4,000 small boat harbours. Each year the Corps of Engineers removes over 350 million cubic yards of dredged materials from the navigation channels. One particularly fruitful area of research is the Corps' attempt to create new marshes with dredged material. Natural resource management of rivers, Harbors and wetlands.
