This study applies statistical methods to obtain gap prediction in the vicinity of an on-ramp, as well as the prediction of on-ramp flow levels. Using aerial experimental data, feasibility of prediction strategies is shown. Digital simulation of freeway traffic is presented. An examination of nine freeway simulation models, developed by various research institutes, is carried out. A modular simulation model is developed, in several steps, to achieve the ultimate goal of simulating freeways with arbitrary interchange systems and configurations.
