The Spacelab 3 Mission is the first operational flight of the Spacelab and is scheduled for launch on SIS 51-B, no earlier than April 29, 1985, at 12:00 noon, Eastern Daylight Time. Spacelab 3 is a microgravity mission with investigations in five major disciplines: materials science, life sciences, fluid mechanics, atmospheric science, and astronomy. Two of the investigations (one in materials science, Mercury Iodide Crystal Growth (France), and one in astronomy, Very Wide Field Camera (France) 1 have flown previously aboard Spacelab 1. There is also an investigation (ionization measurements) fran India. Major new hardware developments in materials sciences, fluid dynamics, and life sciences are included in the flight: and the experimental hardware is designed for multiple flight use. 'Iwo payload specialists, with expertise in crystal growth and fluid mechanics , were selected for flight on the Spacelab 3 Mission. 'Iwo Get-Away Specials (Global Low Orbit Message Relay (GLOMR) and Northern University Satellite (NUSAT)) are scheduled for deployment late in the mission after completion nf Spacelab operations. The enclosed Mission Operation Report contains specific details on the Spacelab 3 Mission and its payload. Details of the STS 51-B Mission are contained in the STS 51-B Flight Operations Report, No. M-989-51-B.
