An intercomparison study was conducted between two instrumented vehicles and a new nitrogen oxide (NO) remote sensor developed by the University of Denver. A 1992 Aerostar minivan and a 1991 Taurus wagon were equipped with on-board engine control and monitoring systems, as well as instrumentation for measuring the vehicle exhaust emissions in real time. By altering engine operating parameters these vehicles produced a wide range of fairly reproducible NOx emissions (50 ppm to 5500 ppm). The intercomparison study revealed that the NO remote sensor was capable of measuring NO emissions with an error of 860 ppm. The results of this study also indicate that the remote sensors ability to accurately assess NO emissions may be dependent upon vehicle speeds and aerodynamics (exhaust plume dispersion).
