Mission preparation by a military pilot is a complex decision making process. It involves the integration of several kinds of expertise, the use of heuristic knowledge and the assistance of specialists. Further, it can be characterized by a continuously changing mission scenario and mostly limited time available for mission preparation. The paper first elaborates on those characteristics of military mission preparation that make it desirable to use expert systems. Then it describes the approach from operations research which provides an operational environment for expert system applications. Finally, it presents an inventory of the state-of-the-art of expert systems in computer-aided mission preparation.
