This report summarizes a demonstration test of a FLIR-compatible helicopter landing aid conducted at the Naval Weapons Center (NWC) in FY 1978. The system is a means by which the secure landing of helicopters can be accomplished in adverse visibility conditions. For this test, a night vision sensor (FLIR) was mounted with a CO2 laser illuminator on a UH-1N helicopter. The FLIR image was annotated with range to the landing site and closing rate data provided by a separate airborne electro-optical rangefinder. The landing site was equipped with a portable FLIR beacon (PFB) for long-range (greater than 3 kilometer) homing and a retroreflector array for landing site identification during short-range (less than 1.5 kilometer) approach and landing. Data were recorded in the aircraft and a video tape showing the results of testing the various elements of the system was generated. (Author)
