This study of national aerospace test centers was undertaken with a view to ensure that optimal use was made of the existing facilities and expertise in Europe. Three centers were identified: The CNES/INTERSPACE (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) center in Toulouse (France) the IABG (Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft mbH) center in Munich (Germany), and the IAL Space Centre - now known as the CSL (Centre Spatial de'Universite de Liege) Test Centre at the University of Liege in Belgium. These three, together with the ESTEC (European Space Research and Technology Centre) at Noordwijk in the Netherlands, make up the European coordinated facilities available for use by the European Space Agency and its member states. ESTEC operates the Large Space Simulator (LSS) and the Large European Acoustic Facility. At ESTEC space simulation, dynamic testing, and electromagnetic testing are carried out. Similar tests are conducted at IABG and CNES/INTERSPACE. At CSL similar activities take place, but there is also a clean room.
