The idea of giving highway information to drivers by way of automobile radios has been growing, and the name of Highway Advisory Radio, or HAR, has been adopted for the various uses of the concept. The present experiment is concerned with the employment of HAR in construction work areas, which was the orignial use to which it was put by Halstead (Halstead, 1957). The study investigates the preference of drivers for a longer detailed message or for a shorter condensed version without details. The messages were also presented to the subjects at three different distances from the beginning of the construction area.
