Grounding statistics for vessels over 6000 G.T. were compiled for the 6 years 1970-1975. Results were analyzed for tankers and non-tankers, each in four gross tonnage groups as to location, cause, and result. Groundings were studied in detail on proposed nuclear vessel routes with an approximate calculation of casualty probability based on route casulaties and ship traffic flow. Recommendations are given to help reduce the frequency of groundings for the nuclear vessels.
