The purpose of the research was to develop a statistical model that predicts the speed distribution for vehicles on a uni-directional multilane highway. The model, developed during the first year of the research, includes only three parameters of driver behavior and may be applied over the range of vehicle concentration from zero to capacity and beyond to the full range up to jam density. During the second research phase, the model was fully validated and modified using experimental and observed data. Concurrently, the evaluated model was used to study the interaction between cars and buses using the same highway. Emphasis was placed on determining means for optimizing the flow of traffic on the facility, with a view to maximizing passenger throughput. A potential application of the research analysis is the design of an expressway on-ramp control device. Such a device would be used to maintain an optimal traffic flow and prevent instabilities from developing. The research also evaluated the feasibility of varying the bus/auto mix on metropolitan expressways during peak demand through a restricted land use strategy.
