Conventional transportation science with its roots in neo-classical economic thought has concentrated almost exclusively upon the analysis of travel demand. Heavy reliance has been placed upon static equilibrium models and as a consequence little attention has been given to the supply context. This paper highlights a number of the results of a research project the principal aim of which was to gain an insight into the evolution of urban transportation supply by analyzing accessibility to employment within Greater Glasgow. It is the intention here to focus upon variations in the efficiency of accessibility between 1963 and 1971, with particular emphasis placed upon evaluating the relative impact upon accessibility of changes in land use patterns (residential and workplace) and patterns of transport provision (private and public).
