An investigation of the effects of propeller operation on pitching moments has been made with particular reference to the effect of propeller forces, the field of flow in the slipstream, and the increments of lift on the wing and the tail. Two single-engine monoplanes without flaps were tested in the full-scale wind tunnel and efforts were made to correlate the results with the available theory of the phenomena involved. A procedure, directly applicable only to single-engine monoplanes without flaps, has been set up for predicting the effect of propeller operation on pitching moments. This procedure is, at least for the present, a satisfactory engineering approximation, as indicated by the checks obtained for the two airplanes tested. An example illustrating the procedure has been included.
