Ninety-four traffic safety projects were analyzed to determine crash reduction factors and benefit/cost (B/C) ratios for seven different improvement categories. Confidence intervals for the various crash categories were also determined. New crash reduction factors and B/C ratios are recommended for five of the seven categories analyzed. Overall analysis showed that the projects had a mean crash reduction rate of 23 percent. Hazard Elimination Safety (HES) projects accounted for a 40 percent decrease in crashes. Transportation Safety Funds (TSF) projects showed a 21 percent decrease in crashes. In all cases, the 90 percent confidence interval (the interval at which we can be 90 percent confident that the true mean lies within) is positive.
