The Volpe National Transportation System Centers Environmental Measurement and Modeling Division (Volpe Center), is supporting the FAA in implementing its Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) Program. The objective of the NextGen Program is to design and implement an air transportation system capable of accommodating an expected tripling in required capacity over the next 25 years. As part of this initiative, the Volpe Center participated in a study to determine the potential fuel saving and noise reduction benefits of installing experimental spiroid winglets on an aircraft.
