A two-year pilot telecommuting program was conducted to develop and test ways of equitably sharing office space, thus, conserving and reducing space demands. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) supplemented the pilot funding to begin the study of possibilities for reducing the amount of office space used by telecommuters. The report is a summary of that study. Early in the implementation stage of the pilot it became clear that some telecommuters were using less office space; a few have given up their central office spaces entirely. The purpose of the special study was to investigate and test various low-cost options for reducing the amount of office space used by telecommuters without damaging the telecommuters' sense of belonging to their work groups.
