The military benchmark consists of the High Incidence Research Model (HIRM), a model of a generic military combat aircraft capable of flying at high angles of attack, for which an enhanced manual control augmentation system has to be designed. In the report H(sub infinity)-, mu-synthesis is used to design a controller for the complete, nonlinear model of the HIRM, using the requirements stated in the HIRM design benchmark. The important handling qualities requirements are incorporated into the design using reference models with ideal handling qualities. A representation known as a Linear Parametrically Varying system is used to model the nonlinearities and the variations of the aircraft model over the design flight envelope. Using the stated approach, two controllers for both the longitudinal and the lateral-directional aircraft motions were designed.
