The effects of transportation on the environment have come increasingly to the fore in the Republic and elsewhere over the last decade. Basically the problems that arise may be considered under two main headings - firstly those that arise from the impact of transport infrastructure and secondly those that arise from the use of the infrastructure by vehicles. In the latter connection problems caused by fumes, vibration, noise and dirt come readily to mind. Transport policies in the major metropolitan areas of the Republic have been formulated around 4 main goals, namely mobility, convenience for the user, reasonable costs and minimum side effects. From these goals each metropolitan transport area has formulated numerous objectives for the transport plan for the particular area.
