The concept of thrust-augmented maneuvering (TAM) for lifting reentry vehicles is discussed and compared with the aerodynamic glide maneuver potential of conventional reentry vehicles. It is demonstrated that the maneuvering performance of a TAM vehicle and that of a pure glide vehicle may be compared on the basis of an equivalent lift/drag ratio which is a function of the vehicle aerodynamic and propulsion system characteristics. A vehicle weight tradeoff is given which compares the configuration weight of a glide vehicle with that of a TAM vehicle having identical maneuver potential. (Author)
