The Maritime Administration has developed a very general three-dimensional time-dependent ship motion prediction program. One application of this program is to produce ship maneuvering coefficients from first principles. This research effort is an intermediate step in attaining that goal. It compares measured and computed hydrodynamic side forces for turning circle maneuvers conducted by the Esso Osaka. It was found that in general the sum of the centripetal force and rudder force will exceed the inviscid hydrodynamic side force.
