Results are presented, obtained at ONERA in order to determine the response of a solid propellant to pressure and velocity fluctuations. Two different experimental techniques have been developed. A first line of research makes use of rockets known to be unstable (L or T rocket motors); the comparison of cold and hot tests shows the low credibility of the results on T rockets motors; the ninhomogeneity of temperature is scale dependent. A second line of research uses rockets with a forced geometrical variation of the throat section. These methods are discussed in some detail from the experimental and theoretical stand points. Here again cold gas comparative tests emphasize the effect of combustion or the observed gain. A linear theory predicts the observed trends. (Author)
