For high-speed aircraft, it is sometimes desirable to install a combination of two different types of engines in order to offset the shortcomings of having only one type of engine. The paper first explains the three common types of engines of high-speed aircraft, including the turbojet engines, the ramjet engines, and the liquid rocket engines, pointing out the shortcomings of each type. The paper then outlines the advantages of combining two types of engines for one aircraft, making the two types of engines complement each other's shortcomings. All the three combinations possible are dealt with briefly. The drawback of using a combination of two engines is that the aircraft must carry the weight of two engines instead of one, thereby increasing the load of the aircraft. (Author)
