The Pitcairn YG-2 autogiro was delivered by air to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics at Langley field to undergo tests which would determine its suitability for use as a service type by the Army Air Corps. Preliminary flights made by the test pilots of the N.A.C.A showed that the control forces required for normal flight were undesirably heavy and were subject to violent fluctuations which made the machine unsuitable for service use. It was accordingly decided that the N.A.C.A would obtain measurements in flight of the control forces both to substantiate the pilots' reports and to serve as a basis for the development work required to eliminate the undesirable characteristics of the machine.
