A major conclusion of a previous survey conducted by SRI for DTNSRDC was that the development of disposable, nestable aircraft external fuel tanks with automated assembly aboard ship, using robotic equipment, is a feasible option for implementation within the next five to ten years. Additional research was then undertaken to define & evaluate a number of candidate system design concepts, to develop a scenario simulation procedure designed to measure the theoretical responsiveness of the system designs, and to conduct a cost-benefit analysis to establish the relative merits of the system design concepts in conjunction with alternative options for the physical distribution of fuel tanks to remotely deployed aircraft carrier task groups. The results of this research are the subject matter of this report. Keywords: Aircraft fuel tanks, Robotics, Fabrication and assembly, Materials handling, Physical distribution, Cost benefit analysis, System design.
