A study of the measurement of road roughness with the Mays Ride Meter (MRM) is presented. A model is developed to interpret the effects of the long and short waves on the riding quality of the road and used to explain the difference between the Serviceability Indices obtained from the Surface Dynamics Profilometer (SDP) and the MRM. In addition, a statistical analysis is used to show the degree to which the repeated runs of the MRM agree with each other. An assessment is then made as to the applicability of the MRM and its limitations.
