The advanced solid-state array spectroradiometer (ASAS), an airborne imaging spectrometer with 30 spectral channels extending from 450-880 nm, is described. Modifications to the sensor mounting technique changed the ASAS from a fixed nadir viewing instrument to a sensor capable of multiple direction observations of surface bidirectional reflectance distribution functions. The system was flown on the NASA Ames C130 aircraft to obtain surface bidirectional reflectance measurements of vegetation; it demonstrated excellent reliability and radiometric stability.
