The Mars Observer mission will study Mars from a low-altitude orbit unlike that of any previous mission. During interplanetary cruise, propulsive maneuvers are required to satisfy limits on the probability of impact with Mars and to ensure capture. After Mars capture, the Observer must be brought to an accurate, near-circular mapping orbit through a series of maneuvers. Propulsive maneuver strategies have been developed to meet these needs. This paper describes the methods used in the analysis, the control capabilities, and the associated expected velocity changes for the mission.
