The possibility of automated preflight engine checkouts is examined theoretically to minimize or eliminate the need for extravehicular activity related to engine maintenance in space. The minimum necessities of preflight information and processing are set forth with respect to routine engine examination. Emphasis is placed on the ability to remotely assess the factors which affect an engine's integrity and preparedness, with consideration given to different approaches and engine parameters. A range of approaches are introduced, the most sophisticated of which includes a full assessment of engine integrity is performed with the sensor and operational history-data system. Of the 36 checkout methods examined, three methods for determining engine integrity are defined with a range of integrated control and health monitoring sophistication.
