The miniature unmanned Airborne Sunphotometer for Sun-Tracking Atmospheric Research (muSSTAR) will provide a link between local aerosols in the boundary layer and the global measurements of Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT). We describe a path towards a prototype small airborne sunphotometer hosted on an unmanned aerial system for enabling air-quality and climate science by profiling the lower atmospheric boundary layer over land and boundary layer in coastal environments. This project aims to miniaturize NASA Ames’ world-leading instrumentation for use on unmanned aerial vehicles.
