In an interview, Samuel I. Schwartz, New York City Traffic Commissioner, talked about observations and suggestions made in his book, and what the future of transportation might look like, not just in cities, but across the US. Schwartz said younger people are using many more modes of transportation and in much greater numbers. They need a balanced transportation system, and this increased usage will encourage and strengthen multimodal choices in cities. Transit systems are a vital public service that need to be provided, and they should do away with the word subsidies when discussing their sustainability. Driverless cars will be terrific on limited access highways, with many benefits that will come from better energy efficiency and less wear and tear on roads by eliminating the shock waves of today's stop and go driving. They need to deal with the issue of driverless cars right now to get ahead of the issues.
