Since the 1960s, the US has repeatedly started and folded space-nuclear reactor projects for propulsion or to generate electricity for spacecraft. NASA hasn't given up on nuclear reactors, because of the potential they have to generate electricity for probes and human missions. The agency has a new nuclear strategy that will face its most ambitious test yet next year in the Nevada desert. Here, Hadhazy tells the story.
