The documents stored on an Electronic Library System will require extensive tagging and indexing to allow for the updating of specific fields of information, rather than revising whole documents, and to ensure the integrity of the document after the update process. Navigation charts, which are unintelligent pieces of paper, will require intelligence not only to be selectively displayed, but to selectively update its components as well. With this kind of volatile data, updates may be stored separately until the effective date of the new information. Transferring revised data to the ELS will range from media replacement to satellite communications and will provide greater flexibility for document selection.
