Glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (FRPP) that is able to maintain high strength (rigidity) qualities, especially at high temperatures, has for some times been used in the production of functional automotive components. However, with limited dimensional stability or warpage of FRPP when compared to amorphous polymers such as ABS, it has been difficult to use FRPP for large automotive components, such as those found in the automobiles interior. In addition to reducing warpage and distortion of automotive components produced from FRPP, the contents of the PP matrix and the adhesion between PP and reinforcement were studied. It was learned that certain combination of PP, glass fiber and minerals with chemical reaction achieved not only good dimensional stability with strength for large components, but also good moldability and long - term durability of those same components, FRPP, furthermore, has recycling properties that are an added benefit in the automotive industry. In this presentation, the physical characteristics of Chisso's FRPP and its application for automotive instrument will be introduced.
