The next generation of gas turbine engines will provide significant improvements in future military aircraft capabilities. These engines promise major increases in specific power and fuel efficiency due to the availability of a broad base of synergistic technology improvements in critical areas. Major development programs are underway to place these engines in operation.Aircraft effectiveness improvements: such as increased payload, range, maneuverability, increased supersonic persistence, plus vertical and/or short take off and landing (V/STOL) will result. Additionally, these engines promise to be less costly to acquire and maintain.This paper addresses the payoffs in terms of military aircraft capability for these engines, with an emphasis on V/STOL systems. A review of the data and technology programs supporting these projections is presented.
