The Mercedes-Benz concept for flexible methanol/gasoline operation will be explained using the 300 SE as example. Any methanol content up to a maximum of M85 can be measured by means of a sensor and processed accordingly in an electronic system.Special importance is attached to exhaust emissions, particularly to minimizing aldehydes. Whereas the standard production gasoline vehicle only needed an underfloor catalytic converter, two additional catalytic converters installed close to the engine were required on the methanol-operating vehicle, the reason being the reduction in aldehyde emission.Mercedes-Benz will probably be present on the North American market with the concept described as of model year 1994.
