A study of low cost, single frame speakers suggests the need for a driver with improved bandwidth and beamwidth characteristics over the two types of speakers presently available. A new driver design is introduced. The speaker is modeled and performance trade-offs are investigated. The final design is a driver with an extended frequency range and wider beamwidth than conventional designs. Furthermore, the design is unique in that it involves the use of a moving tweeter to aid in accomplishing the acoustic objective. This particular study focuses on a sound reinforcement application, although the design criteria is appropriate for auto applications as well. The trademark “Co-motional” has been assigned to this design.
