The subject “Cargo Terminal Facilities” has, in the past, focused attention solely on those facilities located at the airport. To properly plan for mass air cargo transportation, our future perspective must be broadened. The basic problem areas and the efficiency levels must be defined. Having uncovered these elements of influence, they must be dissected, analyzed and projected to determine the degree of influence ten years hence. Innovations are on the horizon. Knowing the true impact that these innovation will have on key elements of our airfreight distribution, will effect the degree of airfreight penetration in the national distribution system. This paper is intended to give a broad purview of three of these basic elements: The aircraft -- the container system -- and the terminal system.
