CARBOFLEX®, a new, inexpensive carbon fiber recently introduced by Ashland Oil's Carbon Fiber Division, is finding high performance - cost effective use as an asbestos replacement in industrial brakes, It has been found to out-perform other fibers now being used in similar applications. With the continuing trend for replacement of asbestos, it has promise of becoming an important ingredient in brake formulations.AEROCARB™, a high carbon forming pitch, is now also available for use in carbon/carbon fiber composites. This also provides the brake industry with a material which could reduce the cost of carbon/carbon fiber brakes for possible introduction into industrial applications.
