This SAE Standard applies to new refrigerant used in motor vehicle passenger air-conditioning (A/C) systems designed to use R-1234yf, including belt and electrically driven compressors. Refrigerant for use in hermetically sealed, refrigerated cargo systems is not covered by this document. The purpose of this SAE Standard is to establish the minimum level of refrigerant purity required of, and refrigerant container specifications for, new R-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoro-1-propene) for use in mobile air-conditioning (A/C) systems. The refrigerant shall meet all the purity specifications and container requirements as identified in this SAE Standard for servicing mobile air conditioning systems. R-1234yf is a new chemical having a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) value. Since R-1234yf is not currently manufactured by production methods, this document provides minimum guidelines for purity and requirements for distribution and use in the mobile air conditioning service sector. Future revision of the requirements in this standard shall be based upon the results of analyses of R-1234yf refrigerant produced from production manufacturing facilities. Such future refrigerant purity requirements that are deemed appropriate for this application may also comply with applicable future AHRI 700 specifications.
