The general family of power-splitting hydrostatic transmissions is classified into three- and four-shaft systems. Important features in their theory of operation are covered in this paper. The Appendix records development of equations and illustrates solutions for example tractor transmissions. The author offers these systems as answering certain design problems. Any one of the systems described provides a design flexibility with the use of variable or fixed displacement hydraulic units and an unending variety of planetary configurations.
