If a recoverable vehicle is to land in water, retro-thrust jets have secondary effects that must be considered. “Ground effect” or return flow of the jets from water surface back to vehicle is important. A cavity in the water surface is formed by the jets and has a significant effect on vehicle acceleration and surface pressure at impact. This paper presents a method developed for performing the calculations concerning water impact. The method allows for a cavity in the water surface, but is not limited to this condition.
