The development and application of sand and dust protection devices for the Lycoming gas turbine engine are discussed. A brief history of the erosion problem is given, and solutions such as separators, screens, casing inserts, and coatings are evaluated with regard to their contribution to the extension of engine operating life. Engine wear and erosion characteristics are described and field experience with protective devices is presented.
